The Azerbaijani Customs have recently published their trade data for the months of January to October 2019, which we saw as an opportunity to showcase some of new visualization techniques we have been using for international trade data.

While the oil and gas industry remains dominant and accounts for almost 92% of all exports, other industries are growing as well, such as other mineral and vegetable products, as well as textiles and plastics. On the import side, the main categories are machinery (China), vegetable products (Russia), and mineral products (USA).

Unfortunately, the Harvard Growth Lab's economic complexity ranking (ECI) puts Azerbaijan at 127th place out of 133 markets studied. Long-term focused strategic policy conducted by the government is seen as the only way for future diversification in the country.
